Frequently asked questions

Odyssey Money brings every account you own into one place, including 401(k) balances you left behind, and tells you whether that total puts you on pace to retire. These are the questions people ask most before they start.

About Odyssey Money

What is Odyssey Money?

Odyssey Money is an account aggregator. You connect the accounts you already have, see them together in one place with a running total, and find out whether that total puts you on pace to retire. Searching for 401(k)s you left behind and projecting your retirement are things the aggregator does, not separate products.

How does Odyssey Money know whether I am on pace to retire?

It projects your connected balances forward using your current age, target retirement age, contributions, and expected return, then compares the result against the monthly income you want in retirement. Because the projection runs on your connected accounts, it updates as those balances change instead of relying on numbers you typed in once.

Is Odyssey Money free?

Yes. The free plan includes the 401(k) search, the portfolio dashboard, and the basic retirement calculator. A paid plan adds more account connections, advanced retirement scenarios, and full portfolio management, and you can upgrade from inside your dashboard whenever you want it. Nothing expires and no card is needed to start.

Do I need an account to use the retirement calculator?

No. The retirement calculator is open to anyone and runs in your browser without a sign-up. Creating an account is what lets the projection run on your real connected balances instead of numbers you enter by hand.

Why does seeing every account in one place matter?

A retirement projection is only as good as the balances behind it. When savings, brokerage, and old employer accounts sit in separate places, any single view understates what you have and the projection built on it is wrong. Aggregating first is what makes the answer about retirement trustworthy.

Connecting your accounts

What kinds of accounts can I connect?

Retirement accounts such as 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and IRAs, along with brokerage, savings, and checking accounts. Odyssey Money reads the holdings inside them and sorts everything into stocks, bonds, cash, crypto, real estate, and alternatives, so the total reflects everything you own rather than your retirement accounts alone.

How do I find a 401(k) from an old job?

Search your former employer by name. Odyssey Money holds records for more than 260,000 employer retirement plans in the United States, and a match tells you the plan name, the custodian holding the money, and where the plan sponsor is located. From there you can connect the account and it joins the rest of your balances.

Search your employer

What if my employer is not in the 401(k) search?

Submit a request from the search box and Odyssey Money will look into adding the plan. In the meantime you can still create an account and connect your retirement and investment accounts directly, so the rest of your picture is not blocked waiting on one employer.

Security and your money

How does Odyssey Money connect to my accounts?

Through Plaid, the same connection layer used by most major financial apps. Odyssey Money never sees or stores your bank credentials, and the connection is read-only, so balances and holdings can be read but no money can be moved.

Can Odyssey Money move or withdraw my money?

No. Every connection is read-only. Odyssey Money can read balances and holdings to build your picture, and it has no ability to transfer, withdraw, or trade anything in your accounts.

Is my financial data secure?

Stored data is encrypted with AES-256, and account connections run through Plaid rather than through credentials held by Odyssey Money. Your financial account data is never sold to third parties or data brokers.

Can I disconnect an account later?

Yes. Connected accounts are managed from the Connections page in your dashboard, and you can disconnect any of them at any time. Disconnecting stops Odyssey Money from reading that account and removes it from your total.
